5 Common Travel Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them!)

Planning a vacation is exciting. There's the anticipation, the dream destinations, the Pinterest board inspiration! But even seasoned travelers can fall into a few easy-to-make traps that turn what should be a relaxing escape into a stressful scramble. Here's five common mistakes that can threaten to derail even the best-laid plans, and how to make sure they don't happen to you!

1. Waiting Too Long to Book
Why it’s a mistake: Gone are the days when a certain Tuesday of the month at a certain time could yield you the best, possible rate. Prices for flights, hotels, cruises, and even all-inclusive resorts often rise as the travel date approaches. Most vacation elements are available to book a year out (sometimes more), and people are planning ahead more than ever. Waiting can also mean missing out entirely on top-rated experiences or limited-availability rooms. A little extra time can also be used time to pay for your vacation a little bit at a time.
How to avoid it: Book flights at least 3–6 months ahead for international travel, and 2–4 months for domestic trips. For cruises and Disney vacations? The earlier the better, trust me! Early bookings often come with better rates, better room choices, and more peace of mind. Nervous about missing out on a new promotion or deal? That's why you have me! I monitor every reservation making sure my clients always have the best price possible!

2. Overpacking (or Under packing!)
Why it’s a mistake: Overpacking leads to heavy luggage, baggage fees, and hauling things you never wear. After all, no one wants to pull a 75-pound suitcase across cobblestone street or up steep cruise gangways. However, under packing can be just as bad! Under packing can leave you scrambling to buy overpriced essentials at tourist shops or hunting for a local pharmacy where your medications may be in another language! No one wants to forget their swimsuit on a beach trip or suffer a headache without your chosen remedy.
How to avoid it: Say it with me...PACKING LIST! I send each one of my clients a thoughtful packing list to make sure they have EXACTLY what they need for each vacation. It outlines a plan for daily outfits and includes a thorough list of essentials. I encourage my clients to stick to versatile, mix-and-match items, and always check the weather. Don’t forget travel-size toiletries and a change of clothes in your carry-on, just in case.

3. Skipping Travel Insurance
Why it’s a mistake: I've heard it millions of times, "I don't need travel insurance. I'm going on this trip regardless." Those can be famous last words, and without travel insurance those few simple words can leave you helpless as you watch your investment disappear. Life happens, and most of the time it is out of your control. Flights get delayed. You or a loved one have a medical emergency. Luggage gets lost. Without insurance, those surprises can turn expensive quickly.
How to avoid it: I ALWAYS encourage my clients to invest in travel insurance to protect your trip and your wallet. Quotes are always complimentary, and the prices are typically better than you would expect. I can help you choose the best policy for your needs, whether it’s cancellation coverage, emergency medical, or "cancel for any reason."

4. Ignoring Passport & Visa Requirements...or Just Not Knowing Them
Why it’s a mistake: Many countries have special forms, documents, or even health requirements before you will be allowed to enter the country. Most airlines require your passport to be valid six months beyond your return date. Some also require a visa that takes time to secure. While some of these things can be completed in a short amount of time, there can be some that are time consuming.
How to avoid it: I research every place my clients travel to assure they know, and are compliant with, all entry requirements, including any requirements that may be needed when they return home. I can help you make sure all the t's are crossed and i's are dotted so you can begin enjoying your vacation before you even arrive!

5. Not Planning Excursions & Dining in Advance
Why it’s a mistake: I know there are some people who like to wait until they are in destination to decide on excursions and dining. I totally get it! However, if there is something you MUST see or a place you HAVE to eat, don't wait! Waiting to book excursions or dining once you arrive can mean limited options, long lines, or paying premium prices. Some popular tours and restaurants book out months in advance!
How to avoid it: Give me your list of must dos, can't misses, and have to eat places, and I can handle the rest! I can book excursions, tours, theme park extras, and dining before you go. It’s one of the best ways to reduce stress and ensure you don’t miss out on the moments you’re most excited about. Don't be one of those people in the long line with extreme FOMO. Make the most of your travel!
